The Killarney National Park covers 26,000 acres and boasts over 70km’s of trails and paths all affording spectacular lake, mountain, and native woodland views, sure to leave a lasting impression.
Killarney has numerous loop walks where walkers return to the start point without recovering their steps – some can be completed in 30 minutes while others can take 4+ hours.
There are several cycle trails in the Killarney National Park and a day of cycling is a great way to explore the local surroundings.

Muckross Lake Loop Walk (easy - moderate)
This loop brings you on a scenic walk from Muckross House, down to the lake shores, and from there all the way out to the Muckross Peninsula. Stroll in nthe Reenidinna Wood and on the western edge of Muckross Lake. Make a pitstop at Dinis Cottage, before following the woodland and lakeside paths back to Muckross House.
Gap of Dunloe Walk (moderate - strenuous)
Begin your journey at Kate Kearney's cottage. This 12km route will lead you through the famous gap, guarded on both sides by the majestic McGillyCuddy Reeks mountain range. This walk has to be experienced to believe as the views are simply magical, featuring streams, lakes, waterfalls and of course the scenic mountain range.
Tomies Wood Walk (moderate)
This is a moderate 9km walk bringing you through the scenic Tomies Wood right along the shore of Lough Leane. The trail meanders through the wood before crossing the North Bridge and returning by the South Bridge and includes a visit to the breathtaking O'Sullivan's Cascade.
Ross Island Walk (easy - moderate)
This is one of Killarney's easier walks, you are rewarded with stunning scenery for little effort. The castle istself sits on the picturesque Lough Leane, while the MacGillyCuddy Reeks feature as a background. This walk will take you from the impressive 15th century structure to a limestone rock formation, Library Point, from here, you can look out across to the shore of Innisfallen Island.
Other Routes - Ross Castle Loop - Torc Waterfall Loop
Ross Castle Loop:
This 5km loop trail at Ross Castle in Killarney is an easy route that takes in some of the best historical scenery the town has to offer. Beginning at Ross Castle, you will pass the old copper mine, get to see the famous Goveners Rock and Library Point. It takes an average of an hour to complete. This is a very popular area for birding, fishing, and running.
Torc Waterfall Loop:
This 4.5km loop takes you from Muckross House, leaving the estate along the lake loop but taking a right turn as you go. You will climb steadily through the trees to cross the Owengarriff river, just above the main falls. A series of steps leads you back down through the woodlands on the eastern side of the river to the viewpoint of the 18m high Torc Waterferfall. The trail continues by passing through dry underground bridge before rejoining the lake loop and returning to Muckross House.

The Muckross Route
The route will take you passed some of Killarney's most well-known sites and landmarks in the Muckross area. Take in Muckross Abbey, Muckross Traditional Farms, Muckross House and Gardens and Torc Waterfall before completing the loop and enjoying the scenic cycle back to The Gleneagle.
Lough Leane Loop
Cycle the shores of the largest of the Lakes of Killarney, Lough Leane and take in many spectacular sites and landmarks along the way. Enjoy views of Ross Castle & Muckross Estate, and soak up the magnificent of the lake and its islands. There is so much to enjoy on this route around Killarney.
Killarney National Park Route
Killarney House & Gardens, Deenagh Cottage, Knockreer Estate, and Ross Castle all feature on this moderate but breathtaking cycle around the park and along the shores of Lough Leane. The lake and the surrounding mountains are simply magical and there is a wealth of idyllic views to be experienced.
The Muckross Lake Loop
This loop will take you around the picturesque Muckross Lake, taking in a wealth of stunning scenery along the journey. Cycle passed Muckross Abbey, Brickeen Bridge, Dinis Cottage, Old Weir Bridge & Meeting of The Waters, Torc Waterfall, Muckross House and Gardens, and finally, Muckross Traditional Farms. You will not be short of spectacular scenery to enjoy.
